THE SCIENCE OF PSYCHOLOGY
Psychology is the science that studies behavior and the factors - the causes that provoke it. It is an independent science, although its branches may often "be related" to branches of others Sciences. For example, Clinical Psychology is quite close to Psychiatry,Social Psychology with Sociology,Biopsychology and Neuropsychology with Biology, etc. Thus, when someone studies psychology (Generally, psychology studies worldwide are self-contained and always at the university level). It deals with a wide range of knowledge that relates to other sciences.
Of course, psychology, like many other sciences, is a child of philosophy since ancient times, while for many it began to constitute an independent science from the mid-19th century with the establishment of the first psychology laboratory in Leipzig by Wundt...From that time on "A lot of water has flowed in the ditch," as our people would say, until this science took on a modern form. Philosophical movements, theorists, and researchers contributed their own piece to support the their assumptions about how the "soul of man" works. This was and is natural, since behavior is not something that one can consider "predictable". If in mathematics and physics we are dealing with numbers and equations,If in biology and medicine by extension we are dealing with physiological function and the chemistry of an organism, in psychology we deal with so many factors that influence how we act daily, that it is really very difficult to support in a way..
A person behaves based on their childhood experiences and traumas, one would say (very simplified) Psychoanalysis (is there anyone who hasn't heard the name Sigmund Freud?)...No, this behavior is a result of reinforcement or the punishment we receive from our environment, the Behaviorist would answer (equally simplistically). These are two (the most dominant) of the hundreds of approaches that exist for the interpretation of human behavior, and the essence lies not in the truth or falsehood that a theory may advocate, but in its contribution to the interpretation of behavior, from a different perspective, on the complementarity of theories, and not to the opposing philosophies...Someone reading the previous paragraph might say, "Ah, this is psychology?", philosophical currents? The answer is no...
Since the 19th century, psychology has acquired a systematic methodology for the study of behavior, that is based on research with specific scientific tools, that often allow for the drawing of safe conclusions. Of course, psychology, growing as a science, divided into branches depending on the field of research and application of its conclusions... Clinical Psychology, Social Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Developmental Psychology and many other branches and subdivisions of them, they have "broken" our behavior into small pieces according to the area of our life (personal, social, work, etc.). or the stage of our personal development (children, adults, elderly) and they study it with the aim of understanding it and above all improving our quality of life...
Finally, it is worth mentioning where this science stands today in Greece. As is customary, anything new in our Country has developed very recently...Thus, the first Department of Psychology, it was established at the Greek University in 1987 and is the Department of Psychology of the School of Social Sciences University of Crete Sciences in Rethymno. In the 1990s, the Department of Psychology of Panteion University was established. the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Philosophy of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Psychology Program of the Faculty of Philosophy of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
